About Page
This project was initiated with the idea that the following pathway would liberate labor. This pathway could be characterized by material gains for workers in the form of resources, time, and capital being used to organize divestment campaigns and to purchase or otherwise acquire our housing and workplaces collectively. With collective ownership and successful organizing to divest from systems of greed, the people could independently democratize the use of resources and institute policies that prevent greed.
Liberating workers along the core pathway will require individuals to take action. The type of action varies across available resources, network, skills, and constraints. In the current state, listless activists, researchers, historians, and community organizers have suggested many different activities and actions that could be categorized along the core pathway. Individuals invested in liberating labor and combating greed are required to investigate and research local initiatives, weigh and consider their impact, and then assess the level of commitment they can make, measured against the constraints they face. Accurate conjecture and assessments of the present conditions could include large numbers of variables, the completed data for which is rarely available. It may also be difficult to align current local initiatives and skillset. Finally, objective analysis on how to prioritize time based on impact is largely excluded from mutual aid and collective action. This project aims to resolve these issues by compiling possible action, making instinctive assumptions, and building a flexible framework through which those assessments could be tested or amended. If the activities and constraints are measured and compared, then the required resources can be evaluated and shared. The first aim to test this hypothesis is to compile a list of activities and assess their scale, solvability, neglectedness, resource cost, needed skills, and time cost to finalize needed hours and resources. That sum total of hours and resources could then be used as constants when assessing how many people over what period of time and how much in resources would be needed to complete the activities. The second aim is to then build a tool that would assess the constraints, skills, resources, time, and network of an individual to propose suggested tasks or activities.
This project began with constraints that are applied systemically, and affect individuals directly. These constraints are included in the table below. These constraints will be assessed and used to determine if an individual has enough time, skills, and resources to support the core pathway. With too high of a constraint score, individuals would be better off supporting themselves.

Constraint severities were calculated by totaling severity posed by threats to action or impact under 3 categories: a threat to action or impact draining or inhibiting factors promoting independence, the pervasiveness of the root causes relating to the threat to action or impact, and risks imposed by resistance to the threat to action or impact.

AX | Risks | Liberty | Impact | 8 |
These threats to action or impact were scored based on instinctive assumptions. The severity is representative of the value related to the action or impact. Acting on the resource of time for instance is evaluated at the highest level of severity, as the resource of time is incredibly valuable to action. A constraint that drains or inhibits time would then be included in the sum count of threats to action or impact calculated for the categorical score, or the ‘drains severity’ score.

Each constraint would receive a constraint severity score. Constraint severities ranged from 5.707 to 10.391. When sorting constraints, the delays and endurance of the flawed justice system ended up being one of the most severe constraints.

According to the primary assumption, tasks would need to be outlined that contribute to liberation. There would be high level tasks that broadly contribute to the goals and further specified subtasks to the high level tasks. Each high level tasks was categorized by which step in the path it supported, and then the high level tasks were scored for scale, solvability, neglectedness, time cost and resource cost. Additionally, nine broadly applicable capacities (or skills) were defined that were allocated into low, medium, and highly applicable categories.

After the high level tasks were drafted, the subtasks were drafted with a corresponding high level task. In calculating the various scores related to each task and category, some assessments were levied on the subtasks while others were applied to the high level tasks. The methodology will divide the scores and their respective calculations into disparate sections.

Solvability assessments were all conducted on high level tasks. Each high level task was assessed with the reciprocal of how many people would be needed to solve the problem (Solvability A) and the percent of relief on an impacted individual provided by an additional person contributing to the task (Solvability B). The total solvability followed the below formula.

The impact score is calculated as follows:

The task with the highest impact score was creating systems to manage the flow of products and services. This task is related to the democratized use of resources, placing emphasis on building systems that allow workers to share in the results of our efforts. The second highest impact is returning to self-stewardship of land and space. The least impactful task was sharing, gifting, or trading with neighbors. This is not a zero-impact task, it is only least impactful because of its very small scale and long term improvement. Each task is valuable and plays an important role.
Time cost was calculated from an expected lowest possible weekly hours committed (tA) and an expected highest possible weekly hours committed (tB).

The resource cost was assessed on a scale of 1-9 for general impact on resources.

In addressing aim 1 to calculate total costs borne by the labor movement, the total hours and resources needed for each task were calculated. For hours calculated, how many people would be needed to solve the problem was multiplied by the time cost. The resource cost was the multiplication of hours needed, the resource cost, the percent of relief provided by another individual contributing their effort, and a factor of 10. These numbers are far from an exact science and rely substantially on several assumptions. This approximation expects total hours needed to reach 168,000,000 and $1.3B in spending. Somewhat obviously, mutual aid takes the largest portion of time (84,000,000 hours) and collective ownership requires the largest in spending ($555M), but it would take much larger numbers to purchase the land back for workers outright. Since the path includes policy changes, collective ownership and land back would end up primarily being accomplished by policy. That said, some spaces or areas will need to be purchased in order to effectively accomplish goals.

In order to assess individuals and recommend the tasks, there would need to be a questionnaire. The approach that was selected focuses on binary questions, often where the affirmative correlates directly to an impact on calculations. A question was written for each condition. The conditions were sorted by most impactful, and if answered in the affirmative, the constraint severity divided by the index minus five would be added to a running variable.

Then, there are ~10 questions each for time, resources, and capacities (or skills). For time, the score initiates at 5 and each affirmative adds half a point. For resources, the score initiates at 0 and each affirmative adds a full point. For skills, there are 11 questions, the score initiates at -1, and each affirmative increments a full point. The resulting skill score is divided by 2 for filtering purposes. For the skill score, each question translates directly to one of the capacities.

Finally, 3 network questions are asked to see if people in one’s network generally have more or less time, resources, and skills.
If the sum of the time score, resource score, and skill score * 2 are less than the condition score, the tool recommends that the constraints outweigh the pursuit of liberty and the tool recommends working to improve whichever scored lowest.
High level tasks are sorted by impacted then filtered by anything under the individual time, resource, and skill scores. This resulting high level task list is trimmed. Then the subtasks are brought in and matched by which skills were indicated in the questions. If the individual indicates they have a skill, the quality of the impact is raised to the power directly relating to the index of which categorical reference it is. These are the final subtasks.
When assessing recommended tasks for the network, the tool adds or subtracts one to the filtering process it follows for high level tasks. Then applies similar skill matching to
This was a personal project, where efficiency was a key component of development. I am not a researcher, and while I appreciate and consume quality science, I recognize this is far from it. I do not endorse this as an objective or prescriptive tool. If anything, it is a compilation of recommendations for action and a means to access them. I would certainly welcome more rigorous approaches to test some of the assumptions made in this tool, but in order to protect the information collected, the standards of data maintenance and security would need to be severe.
I have some experience organizing across different cities in the US, but I would not categorize myself as a community organizer, solely because I lack experience compared to other, more avid organizers and activists. There is much experience talking with many different types of people and I feel confident in having heard their challenges. I believe in the freedom of all from greed, oppression, and abuse and want to do all I can to get us there. This product is a closer representation of the stories I’ve heard, my interpretation of what I’ve read, and making the most of my naturally-inclined cognition to take a concept and follow it through many different conditions.
If this disqualifies me from assembling this, I perfectly understand. The utility of this tool, until the methodology is refined and the assumptions tested, is relegated to the use of the reader’s judgement.
As this was a personal project, my intention was to assist with the internal assessments and prioritizing that I endured when considering how to support liberation. Additionally, I wanted to ease the access to recommended action that could be tailored by the experiences of different individuals. This tool is meant to offer self-reflection. I highly discourage anyone from answering these questions on behalf of someone else without explicit consent. I highly discourage anyone judge anyone based on their answers to these questions. I would actually advise against sharing what the tool recommends unless it’s something you’re considering pursuing.
This tool does not include suggestions related to civil disobedience. That said, there is no doubt that civil disobedience is an effective tool for liberating masses. It has been effective historically and it remains effective in recent revolutions. It is important to acknowledge that not every action taken will allow others to proceed as usual. Some decisions will need to be made about who is welcome to proceed and who must be stopped to prevent further suffering or oppression.
Unfortunately, in the effort of expediency, I often relied on an informed instinct to make assumptions. This section will include a list of references to organizations, documents, or individuals that inspired or shared similar ideas for action.
